Tim Mayza to undergo TJ Surgery
LHP Tim Mayza (Millersville, Quakertown Blazers, 2011) was removed from the Blue Jays game last night after injuring his arm. The diagnosis is a torn UCL and he will undergo T-J surgery.

Mayza was the key left handed reliever for the Blue Jays and made 68 appearances, 4th highest in the American League. He posted a 4.91 ERA with 55 strikeouts in 51 innings and opponent batters recorded a .230 average.

Blue Jay manager Charlie Montoyo summarized the team's feelings best when he said, "Everybody loves Timmy. He pitches, he doesn't complain. He pitches every day and he's got a smile every day."

McKenna success story continues
September 3, 2019

Brian McKenna (Post University, North Jersey Eagles, 2013-14) transitioned from a catcher to pitcher over the last four years while playing Independent League baseball. He put up big numbers with the Florence Freedom of the Frontier League and was signed as a free agent by the Miami Marlins in July. He then made six appearances for Jupiter, the Marlins’ High A team in the Florida State League where he posted two holds and finished three games with a 0.96 ERA. In 9.1 innings he struck out 12 with only one walk and a 0.75 WHIP.

Two former ACBL pitchers had good starts to their pro careers after pitching a lot of innings this spring in college.

Nick Snyder (West Virginia, Trenton Generals, 2017-18), an 11th round draft pick of the Arizona D-backs, did not allow an earned run in 16 innings for the Hillsboro Hops of the short season Northwest League. The 6-6 LHP struck out 27 with a 0.69 WHIP.

Chris Kachmar (Lipscomb, Quakertown Blazers, 2016-17), a 28th round selection of the Chicago Cubs, posted a 4-0 record for the Eugene Emeralds in the Northwest League with a 1.56 ERA in seventeen innings with 24 strikeouts and a 1.27 WHIP.

Melfi will be a freshman at Wagner in the fall and he mostly caught for the Phenoms this summer, but did DH and play the outfield at times.

RHP Francis Driscoll (Colby, Allentown Railers) will receive the Darrin Winston Most Valuable Pitcher Award. He had the league’s lowest ERA at 1.20 in thirteen appearances over 30 innings during the regular season. He struck out 49 with only nine walks while posting five saves. Brian McKenna signs with Marlins
July 26, 2019

Brian McKenna (Post University, North Jersey Eagles, 2013-14) is a good example of someone persevering in Indy Ball to get a contract with a Major League team.

McKenna caught for the Eagles in 2013 and 2014 and signed to play Independent baseball after graduating from Post University in 2015. Over the next four years he transitioned from catcher to pitcher and put it all together for the Florence Freedom of the Frontier League this year. In 22.1 innings of relief he struck out 34 with no walks and a 0.80 WHIP and 3.63 ERA. Reportedly he touched 99 MPH in the All Star game and was signed by the Miami Marlins on July 19 and will report to their Short Season A affiliate, the Batavia Muckdogs.

In other news, second baseman Alec Craig (Chesnut Hill, South Jersey Giants) signed a free agent contract with the Minnesota Twins and is playing in the Gulf Coast Rookie League.

Chris Kachmar (Lipscomb, Quakertown Blazers, 2016-17), one of fifteen former ACBL players drafted in June, is off to a good start with the Eugene Emeralds, the Short Season affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. The 6-3 RHP has a 4-0 record with a 0.96 ERA.

Another draft pick, Shayne Fontana (Lynn, Allentown Railers, 2018, Jersey Pilots, 2017) was promoted to Aberdeen, Short Season affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, after hitting .326 in the Gulf Coast Rookie League.

Gulls Split Doubleheader With Generals in 2019 Opener
June 1, 2019

By Matt Nelson | Ocean Gulls

The Ocean Gulls opened the 2019 season with a split of the Trenton Generals, taking the opener 9-7, and falling in the nightcap 4-0 in 12 innings at the Antrim Elementary School on Saturday.

The birds took a 2-0 in the bottom of the second in the opener on an RBI double by Joshua Jackson. Following a fielder’s choice by Blaise Panzini, Jackson scored on a wild pitch by the Generals starting pitcher.

Trenton tied the game with a run in the top of the third, a run in the top of the fourth and poured five runs on the board in the top of the fifth before Ocean mounted an impressive comeback in the bottom of the fifth.

After a wild pitch by Trenton’s bullpen, Craig Larsen hit a two-run double to make it a three-run game. After Bill Feehan drew a walk, Zachary Joe picked up a two-run single to make it a 7-6 deficit. Michael Belka struck out, but advanced to third on a dropped third strike. Panzini put the finishing touches on the comeback with a three-run double.

Garinder Singh-Sarana pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball to go along with a walk and four strikeouts to earn the win. He also went 1-2 at the plate, picking up his first hit since he was a freshman in high school.

Game 2 didn’t provide many hits for the Gulls, despite a two-out first-inning double by Larsen. The Generals scored four runs in the top of the twelfth to earn the split. Kyle Roche, Will Kramer, Michael Centeno, and Panzini combined for no runs on four hits, six walks and 9 strikeouts over the first nine innings.v The Gulls are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, June 4, as they take on the Ocean Osprey at Wall Municipal Stadium in a nine-inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 P.M.

The Ocean Gulls, proud members of the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League, play their home games at the Antrim Elementary School and Point Pleasant Borough High School in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ, and Wall Municipal Stadium in Wall, NJ. Trivino posted a 8-3 record with four saves and 24 holds in 71 games with the A’s.
